Cyber Addiction Questionnaire

Instructions: For every question, give a score to it based on the below scoring system.
0-Never 1-Rarely 2-Occasionally 3-Frequently 4-Often 5-Always

  1. Do you lose track of time while being online?
  2. Do you find that you are missing deadlines in school?
  3. Do you feel that life without computer is meaningless?
  4. Do you anticipate your next computer session while offline?
  5. Are you ignoring your chores at home due to being online?
  6. Do you prefer to be online than to go out with friends?
  7. Do people around you complain about the time you spend online?
  8. Do you have to defend what you do online to the people around you?
  9. Do you go online to help deal with the daily stress in school or at home?
  10. Are most of your friends people you meet online?
  11. Do you feel angry, frustrated or irritated when someone interrupts you while you are online?
  12. Do you feel yourself feeling tired or sleeping in class due to lack of sleep from being online?
  13. Have you tried cutting down on the amount of time spent online but failed?
  14. Do you find yourself hiding from others how long you have spent online?
  15. How often do you feel depressed, moody, agressive or irritable when you are offline and these feelings go away once you are back online?
  16. Do you find yourself waking up and the first thing you do is to go online?
  17. Do you find yourself no longer participating in your CCAs, class activities or any activities that you once enjoyed?
  18. Do you find yourself having your meals at the computer?
  19. Do you find your relationship with your family affected due to the computer?
  20. Do you find yourself neglecting your personal hygiene?

Add up the numbers you have selected to get your final score. The following is a general scale to measure your degree of addiction.

  • 1 ~ 19 points A user who can control the amount of time spent in front of the computer. Remain in this condition and you will have a balance between cyberspace and real life.
  • 20 ~ 49 points Moderate online user. You may go online a bit too long at times, but you still have control over the situation.
  • 50 ~ 79 points You may face occasional to frequent problems because of the internet. You still have some control over the situation; however you are a stone's throw away from being in serious trouble. Better start considering how the computer has impacted your life.
  • 80 ~ 100 points Red Alert! Red Alert!!! Being online is causing significant problems in your life. You must evaluate how the computer has created havoc in your life! Address the problem immediately! Consult your parents, teachers or school counsellors if you need help dealing with the problem!
